I have a 1710 4wd and need a loader. A dealer within reasonable distance has a 771 loader which came off a 1720 ($1100 with valves and hoses). Does the 1720 have the same horsepower and hydraulics as a 1710? One dealer said a 771 is too big for a 1710. I can't seem to get a consistent reliable answer from local dealers. Does anybody have specs on the 770 (the normal 1710 loader) and the 771?

i would think that the dealer should be able to show you the difference in sizes. I always thought that the 1720 was just a newer version of the 1710? ....

The NH site lists 7308 loaders for a bunch of models--including 1320 through 1920. Not many specs were listed but the list capacity of the 7308 is from 875 lbs. to a bit more than 1000 lbs. The 7308 probably have replaced the 770/1 loader. Anyway, it seems that NH will put the same loader on quite a range of tractors. The NH site didn't help with 770/1 specs but I'd guess they would be generally comparable to the 7308. A dealer should be able to sort it out.

There are a couple of issues. Far as I know 1720's were mainly updated 1710's--pretty much the same tractor. However, I wouldn't want to bet that the loader mounts are the same. Size and weight-wise, a 1710 is going to be well within the range of 1320 - 1920's.

1720's were popular tractors when NH took over Ford, and NH continued 1720 production for quite awhile. I seem to recall that they made major production changes to the original Ford 1720--maybe even a different engine. It might be good to know if it's a Ford 1720 or a NH 1720 because the mounts might be different especially if there are different engines involved. From the similarity between the model numbers of 770 & 771 there's a chance that they're the same loader but with different mounts. Again, this is the sort of subject that dealers sort out.

There may be a reason why one dealer would say the loader would work and another say it's too bid. The PS on 1710's isn't very strong. If the PS is better on 1720's, a loader that's good for a 1720 may create very hard steering on a 1710. Wish I had more real info and less guess and speculation here, but maybe it's helpful anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys. One other concern I have about this 771 is that the mounts were already modified to fit the 1720 (minor changes). I can understand some upward compatibility with a small loader but I'm wondering about downward compatibility with a little larger loader, if it is really larger. I'm going to try to find some more Ford dealers and see if any of the parts guys can come up with the specs. I think my 1710 has a 6.5 gpm pump and I don't know how that compares with a 1720 so you may have brought up a legit concern. The only other loaders I can find are new ones and they generally are around $3,000 so I'm hoping I can find a way to use the 771. ....

Your 1710 should be fine in regards to both weight and hydraulic power. However, I would be concerned about the ability to mount it onto your 1710 without major blacksmithing.
The 1710 was only available with the 770 loader from Ford. The 1900 and the 1910 Fords were available with only the 771 loader. All of this is according to old sales brochures that I have on file.
A safer bet would be to find a 770/770A/770B loader and then try to find a mounting kit for the 1710. You know that this combination will work. Be careful if piecing together a separate mounting kit and loader because the difference in these three versions of the 770 loader is very likely the way that the loader mounts to the tractor. Later 770 loaders were quick attach.
The safest bet would be to find a brand-new after-market loader from Woods, Great Bend, Bush Hog or the like. Time for some cost/benefit analysis! ....

Thanks for the info Jack - If you say my 1710 should be able to handle the 771 once it is mounted then I'm assuming my main concern now is if the 1720 has the same loader mounting as a 1710. The dealer states it came off a 1720 and the previous owner said it worked fine. I have some pics of the 771 mounting brackets and they have been modified to fit the 1720. The loader is 80 miles away so I could at least ask the dealer to measure some of the main mounting dimensions or I suppose better yet just take the tractor over there and rough fit the loader. I'd sure like to buy a new loader but I haven't found one for under $3,000 so the $1100 price tag on the 771 creates a lot of interest. I'd love to find a 770 loader but parts for a 1710 are just about zero in the salvage yards on the internet or on dealer lots. I do however want the finished loader to run and look right. So the question now is: Do the 1720 and 1710 have the same loader mounts? ....

Ken, there were significant differences between the 1710 and the 1720 (engine displacement, wheelbase, and operator's platform). In other words, don't get your hopes up. On the plus side, both tractors had a 12x4 transmission available, which means that they could share a common transmission housing. My suggestion is to make some cardboard templates of the bolt pattern on your 1710 transmission housing and take a trip! ....
